A beginners guide to the cello Part 6 – Hold the bow

Holding the bow can feel like a real challenge in the beginning. It is especially hard to keep the fingers relaxed and flexible without thinking that the bow will fall on the floor. Here, the right angle of the cello/strings/bow will help you find that sweet spot, where the bow balances, while you can play without worry. If the bow feels heavy in the beginning you can even use a pencil to practice the right grip.

– Keep the right hand relaxed, and let the fingers hang downwards.

– Round the fingers a little bit, moving the thumb towards the middle of the hand. Create contact shortly.

– Open the hand a little bit to place the bow. The thumb should be placed just where the frog begins, so that it touches both the black and the brown wood.

– Keep the fingers slightly rounded to create a tiny space inside the hand.

– There should be a tiny gap between the fingers.
